On the evening of June 18, 2024, a devastating fire engulfed the iconic Hollong Bungalow within Jaldapara National Park, Alipurduar district, West Bengal. The blaze, which began around 9:30 PM, rapidly consumed the entirely wooden structure, leaving it in ruins despite firefighting efforts. ([The Times of India][1])
Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the forest lodge had been closed to tourists since June 15. Initial investigations suggest that the fire originated from a short circuit, possibly in an air conditioning unit. Constructed in 1967, Hollong Bungalow was renowned for its unique location deep within the forest, offering guests close encounters with wildlife such as one-horned rhinoceroses and elephants. The lodge’s destruction has deeply saddened the tourism community and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
