Located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, Gorumara National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Spanning over 80 square kilometers, this compact yet vibrant park lies within the Terai ecosystem and is known for its dense forests, sprawling grasslands, and meandering rivers like the Murti and Jaldhaka, which nourish its diverse flora and fauna.

Gorumara is most famous for its population of the endangered Indian one-horned rhinoceros, which thrives in the park’s grassland habitat. It is also home to elephants, Indian bison (gaur), leopards, sloth bears, wild boars, sambar, spotted deer, and barking deer. The mix of tropical deciduous forest and savanna-like terrain provides ideal conditions for this variety of large mammals.

The park is also a haven for birdwatchers. It hosts over 200 species of birds, including Indian hornbills, woodpeckers, scarlet minivets, peafowl, and the rare brahminy duck. Wetlands attract several species of waterfowl and migratory birds during the winter season.

Reptiles such as pythons, monitor lizards, and king cobras also add to the ecological diversity of the park.

Thanks to well-managed tourism and conservation efforts, Gorumara offers a thrilling and educational experience for nature lovers. Its rich biodiversity, easily accessible trails, and multiple watchtowers make it one of North Bengal’s most treasured wildlife destinations.
